I believe the only way to get into the console area is to take apart the dash and I've heard that's about the most pain the butt thing to do in our car and just isn't worth it unless you know it definitely in there it's annoying you THAT bad. GL.
The center console assembly is easy to remove.
Remove the screws from both sides of the console and the bolts under the rubber mat in the compartment. remove the top of your shifter assembly and it will come straight up, watch for plugs to remove so don't rip it off.

If have taken my console off 3-4 times now, if you have any questions let me know, not sure what could make that sound, unless you have something in your air-vent down there that bounces on heavy bumps.
