leave the side mirror control switch, switched one direction or the other so that the mirrors tilt in reverse? such an odd quirk that you have to leave it that way to use this feature.

Use it every day...had it on 3 of 4 of my last cars counting this one, one of the best rarely talked about features. As to not having it's own switch, well, that would be a question for design, but I agree, it would be nice to either have it labeled, or independent of the rest, so people can find it quickly when they are not familiar with the car.
I like to use it but also would like to have it active when the switch is at the center and not focused on 1 of the mirrors. For a few weeks I couldn't understand why my tilt function wasn't working. 1 day I was fixing my mirror angle and threw it in reverse and it tilted. That's how I found out how to do it.
I actually don't like the tilt and leave the switch in the middle so they fold away when I lock the doors and arm the alarm. I find for backing up I utilize the camera far more than the mirrors, I don't really need the tilt to tell me how far from the curb I am a;so when the mirrors are folded tells me that I have locked the car as I park in my townhouse open carport and when I have forgotten I have been broken into . I don't like constantly changing switches so I prefer just leaving it on automatic
Didn't realize the side mirrors work this way -- but seems just fine to me.
Set switch to R or L when I want mirror to tilt (for parking assist, etc)
Change switch in Center position for wider view.

Two different mirror settings without shifting out of reverse. A feature!

Leaving the switch on the left or right doesn't negate the mirrors folding in when the car is locked. You can have both features at the same time leaving the mirror switch on left or right or just the folding mirrors when it is in the middle. I currently have my mirrors doing both.

Yes, you are correct. In thinking more about this topic I suspect the main reason I don't like the tilt is when I am backing up I like to see traffic that might be impeding me from either a parallel or horizontal parking space Persona preference I guess.
Ya, I gotcha. I do my initial look around, but then after that it's all backup cam :D
